Accessibility

Helsinki is well-connected and easily accessible by various modes of transportation.

By Plane

Helsinki by plane is managed by Helsinki Airport (HEL), which is a modern and efficient airport located about 20 kilometers from the city center. The airport is known for its short transfer times, with a single terminal that is easy to navigate under one roof, and an efficient layout. To plan your trip, you should check your airline's recommended arrival times (2 hours for short-haul, 3 hours for long-haul flights) and allow extra time for potential queues at border control, especially with the new European Entry and Exit System (EES).

By train

You can get information on trains in Helsinki from the public transit operator HSL and the national railway company, VR. Within the greater Helsinki area, use the local I and P trains (run by HSL) which connect the city center to Helsinki Airport (HEL) in about 30 minutes. For long-distance travel, use VR to book tickets for high-speed (like InterCity).

By car

Driving to Helsinki is possible with a personal car or via car tours, which allow you to see the city's sights. When driving, remember to keep to the right-hand side of the road and that a valid international driving permit is required for non-EU/EEA licenses. You can also explore scenic drives in the surrounding areas, such as Porvoo or Nuuksio National Park, as well as other Finnish cities.
